1882 Kelly's Directory for Withyham
WITHYHAM (or WITHIAM) is a parish and station on the railway from East Grinstead to Tunbridge Wells, 8 miles south-east from East Grinstead and 7 south-west from Tunbridge Wells, in the Eastern division of the county, Hartfield hundred, East Grinstead union and county court district, Pevensey rape and rural deanery of Pevensey fourth division, Chichester diocese and Lewes archdeaconry.
The church of St. Michael is a stone building, chiefly in the perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, north chapel, nave, aisles, transept, south porch, and a western battlemented tower containing 6 bells, 2 dated 1674 and the rest 1715: on the north-east side is a private chapel, belonging to the ancient family of Sackville, with banners and shields of arms; beneath is the vault, which for many centuries has been their place of burial ; there are three fine monuments by Nollekens, Flaxman and Chantrey, and one by Cibber, of the fifth Earl of Dorset, his countess and their children; the north window exhibits, in stained glass, the inter-marriages of the family from the time of the Norman Conquest: the church was thoroughly renovated and a south aisle added in 1844. The register dates from the year 1663. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £600, with residence and 1 acre of glebe, in the gift of the Earl De Ia Warr and held since 1865 by the Rev. Thomas Frederick Rudston Read M.A. of University College, Oxford.
Not far from the church are a tower and other portions of buildings, the remains of the ancient house of Buckhurst, where the Lord Treasurer of Queen Elizabeth, afterwards mode Earl of Dorset, lived; Earl de Ia Warr is the heir of that family. Moorehouse's charity. of £7 4s.10d. yearly, is for bread, and the Countess of Thanet's, of £18, for apprenticing. A fair is held yearly on Michaelmas Day. Buckhurst Park in the seat of the Earl De la Warr; the mansion is a structure in the Elizabethan style. Forest Field Baptist Chapel is at Crowborough. Earl De la Warr is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is sandy loam and clay; subsoil, clay and gravel. The chief crops are wheat and oats. Hops are successfully grown in this parish and are of the finest quality.
The area is 8,086 acres; gross estimated rental £11,601; rateable value, £10,196 ; and the population in 1871 was 1,970 and in 1881, 2,150.
CROWBOROUGH is a hamlet partly in this parish but principally in that of Rotherfield, under which heading it will be found.
GROOMBRIDGE, 3 miles north-east, is principally in the parish of Speldhurst and county of Kent, a small portion only being in this parish. The railway from East Grinstead to Tunbridge Wells has a station here. There is a Wesleyan chapel. For full particulars of this place, see "Kelly's Directory of Kent."
