The station for Crowborough is on a branch line of the Brighton and South Coast Railway, .between Lewes and Tunbridge Wells.

The passenger alights in the parish of Rotherfield; a short road from the station brings him into the main road, up which he turns to the left.

Being at this point about 400 feet below the Crowborough Beacon, he has a tolerably steep hill to climb before reaching the village, which is about one mile and a half distant. I suppose him to be observant, and desirous of knowing something of what he sees on the way. He will therefore have to stop occasionally to look around him.

If, after ascending the hill a little way, he faces about, he will see the fine old church of Rotherfield, S. Denys, standing out boldly on the top of the hill, in strong relief against the sky.

Crowborough, but a few years ago, was part of the parish of Rotherfield, but it has been severed from its parent church, and is now for all ecclesiastical purposes a separate parish, though it participates in a small degree in the tithes which flow still to Rotherfield.

The ancient vill of Rotherfield is one of the places the visitors to Crowborough should make a point of exploring. It is within a walk or easy drive. Its history will be briefly touched upon when enumerating the places of interest in the neighbourhood.

Notice the deep rich orange-brown colour beneath the water which runs by the side of the road. This water is strongly impregnated with iron, and as it speeds along deposits so much of the metal as it fails to hold in solution. Ironstone abounds in this locality; and at Jarvis Brook, in the valley below, it is supposed iron-works were at one time in operation.
