1879RecollectionsMark AvisSprattsAshdown Forest - notebook 4

During The Ashdown Forest Dispute 1876-1882 commoners and land owners were interviewed by the solicitor William Raper. Their comments were recorded in a series of notebooks:

Avis, Mark. 62. Living at Spratts, Fletching. Laborer. Born in Fletching. When I was about 8 years old I went to work for Mr. Turner at the Church Farm, Fletching, for about 3 years as carter boy. I don't remember that he had any litter from the Forest there. I don't think he had because at that time he hired the Church Wood where he could get plenty of brakes. I then went to service as carter boy with Mr. Osborne at Woodcocks for 3 years............. I then returned to Mr. George Turner at the Church Farm for 20 1/2 years as carter till his death. ........................... I then went to work for Mr. Jesse Bellingham who used the Parsonage Farm and Hellwood Farm adjoining the Church Farm for 18 years till last Michaelmas when he gave them up.
