| | November 2003 | Contributed by | FredHarman | | Cottage Hill | Fred Harman | | John Harman was the second son of John and Rhoda Harman and followed the family tradition being named John. He was born at Cottage Hill on 16th January 1853 and baptised on the 6th March 1853. John Harman married Mary Benson at St Denys on the 24th July 1874. Mary Benson was born 28th April 1854 at Aldenborough, Yorkshire. Her father Francis was a groom and bailiff of Woodleigh, Withyham in 1874. Her mothers name was Hannah (nee Sinclair) Benson and her sister Helen Benson was one of the witness's at the wedding. John sang in the choir for over fifty years at St. Denys church. In the 1881 and 1891 census, John and his family lived at Primrose Villa, Cottage Hill. After the death of his wife Mary on February 1st 1910, John went into business with his daughter Ella &her husband George Harman his nephew. In later life, John lived next door to George and Ella being looked after by Louisa Maria his eldest daughter. John died on the 1st Jan 1931 and was buried on the 5th Jan 1931. |
| | November 2003 | Contributed by | FredHarman | | Cottage Hill | Fred Harman | | John Francis was born on the 25th Mar 1879 at Rotherfield and was christened at Saint Denys on the 11th May 1879. At the age of 18 he run away from home to Portsmouth and joined the Royal Marines artillery at Eastney on the 26th November 1897 for a period of four years. It was here that john learnt to swim and gained his swimming certificate on the 17th June 1895. After serving this time he was discharged on 10th September 1902. John's description of himself by the Royal Marine certification is given as a height of five feet and eight inches with fresh complexion and brown eyes and hair, with two scars on his left fore finger. John returned to civilian life as a painter and then as a postman in 1902. In the following year John Francis married Mary Helen Weller on the 2nd May 1903 at Saint Denys church. On the 17th Oct 1903 his and Mary's first son was born named Frank Jabaz. This followed by a second child a girl named Edith Louisa born on 11th Jan 1905, with the last child another girl born Helen Millicent on the 16th Mar 1906. In 1914 John Francis was a naval reserve so he and a fellow worker in the post office were the first men to leave the village. They joined their ships on the Sunday before war was actually declared, and everyone said they would be back home in less than six months. In the battle of the Heligoland Bight battle German ships were sunk and John Francis was eventually paid prize monies for the sinking of the German ships. This was the princely sum of £7 1s &8 pence. This was in 1922. During his time in the Marines he served on His Majesties Ships Devastation, Hood, Bacchanti, and Columbine at Cromatry. With the end of the war John Francis remained in the Marines until his final discharge in 1922 on the 4th of April. He had served in the Marines a total of a total of twelve years. By then his eldest child Frank was age 19 with Helen the youngest girl age 16. John was now aged 43, and undertook again his job as a postman. Again. It would appear that John Francis Harman lived at his grandfather John's house after his death. For this address no 1 Cottage Hill was given as his address in the royal marine records after his marriage to Mary Helen Weller. This would have been next to his father John living at no 2 Cottage Hill. |
