Mark Cross      Rotherfield  
MARK CROSS, a small hamlet 2 miles north-east from the village of Rotherfield, is an ecclesiastical parish, formed from portions of the parishes of Mayfield, Rotherford, Tidebrook and Wadhurst, in the Eastern division of the county, county court district of Frant, rural deanery of Pevensey fourth division, archdeaconry of Lewes and diocese of Chichester. St. Mark's church is a small red brick building with stone dressings and consists of nave and transept, and has sittings for 180 persons. The register dates from the year 1874. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £163, with residence, in the gift of H. Dixon esq. and held since 1879, by the Rev. James Price, of Durham University and St. Bees College. The principal landowners are the Marquis of Abergavenny and Henry Hayne esq. The soil is clay; subsoil, stone and sand. The chief crops are hops, wheat and oats. The area is 3,400 acres ; the population in 1881 was 800. Here is situated the Court House, where petty sessions are held on the second and fourth tuesday in every month for the Frant Division. There is also a County Police Station, a sub-division of Uckfield, with 1 sergeant and 8 constables.
