Recollections
Ashdown Forest dispute

During The Ashdown Forest Dispute 1876-1882 commoners and land owners were interviewed by the solicitor William Raper. Their comments were recorded in a series of notebooks:

Hollamby, Edward. 66. Born in Hartfield. working now for Mr. Hale. When a small child in petticoats remembers living at Upper Parrock. My father worked for Luke Godly who used the farm. Lived there till 12 or 13 and used to go with Father to Forest for turf. Then went to Hartfield workhouse for a short time, times being very bad. Then we went on the Forest to live and I went to work for Mr. Hartipole at the Dorset Arms, Hartfield (Lord De La Warr's property), for about 2 years. He used a good deal of litter from the Forest. I went with the team to fetch it. We cut within the reservation by the 500. He turned out on the Forest. I then went for a year to Cansiron, then to Cowden for 1 year, then to Scotchford Farm for 2 years under Mr. Luke Godly who had removed there.
