During The Ashdown Forest Dispute 1876-1882 commoners and land owners were interviewed by the solicitor William Raper. Their comments were recorded in a series of notebooks:
Turk, Benjamin. 73. Born at Grovehurst in Buxted 25 April 1806. Have lived in this locality all my life except 1 1/2 years when I lived at Etchingham when I was 9 or 10. I worked for Mr. Hart for over 40 years at Grovehurst Farm. Then went to Shadwell Farm, then belonging to Mr. Scobell, John Brooker my brother-in-law being bailiff (he now lives at Cowden). I worked there 16 years, then to Etchingham 1 vie years, then to Cowden for 2 years, then to Mr. Bellingham at New Barns (Lord De La Warr's) lie year, then to my present place for a year. We had about 20 load of litter from the Forest every year. I was at Grovehurst without missing one year. William Wheatley (dead) used to cut it.
