JAMES COLE
He was a butcher, living at Crockham Hill, Westerham. He inherited his father’s farm, which included Snivers (3 acres) and Westlands (12 acres), both formerly farmed by William Chapman. He also owned Stumblefields (9 acres) and with William Chapman leased Alletts (5 acres). He probably married his wife Sarah before 1701 but not in Westerham. However there were two James Coles at this time and it is impossible to distinguish them. Sarah died of smallpox on September 8th 1714 and her son William on September 14th (Buried at Westerham) James was certainly the father of ELIZABETH COLE.
ELIZABETH COLE was christened at Westerham on April 17th 1713. On December 16th she gave birth to an illegitimate son Samuel “at James Cole’s place at Crockham Hill”. The father was Mr Samuel Lewin of Lee, gent who adopted the boy and on his death in 1747 (Will PCC) left Samuel £100. In 1757 Samuel Collett of East Greenwich esq left £1000,000 (Will PCC) to his nephew Samuel, which wealth had been earned in the slave trade in Venezuela.
