William Groombridge was born in 1748 in the Tunbridge area of Kent to Henry and Philadelphia Groombridge. He was a pupil of the watercolourist, James Lambert, exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1770 to 1790 and published a volume of sonnets in 1789. In 1794 he and his wife Catherine, also a watercolourist, emigrated to the United States. He was a founder of the Philadelphia Columbianum Art Academy and finally settled in Baltimore in 1804 where he died seven years later in 1811
He produced over 120 paintings and drawings during his life and examples of his work are in the collections of the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Maryland and Pennsylvania historical societies.
