HENRY COLE of Brasted, labourer and beer shop keeper (1790-1874)

Henry was baptised on August 22nd 1790 at Brasted, the third son of William Cole and his wife Sarah Mills. He married Sarah Tidy of Hever at Hever on 4th May 1815. Thomas Cole was a witness. Sarah Tidy was baptised on July 17th 1796, the daughter of William and Sarah Tidy of Hever.

Henry Cole's children were born between 1816 and 1822 in Brasted, during which period he was described as a labourer. In 1820 Henry was balloted to serve in the militia but was excused because he was not worth £100 (in which case he would have to provide a substitute) and had two children aged under 14. In 1821 he was paid 2s for cleaning Sundridge church.

In 1827 and 1828 Henry was recorded as a ratepayer in Brasted. From 1828 to 1833 he seems to have lived in Sundridge ar least some of the time so that Brasted was unable to collect rates from him. It is not clear if he received relief. References to relief may refer to another Henry Cole, son of William, who died in 1834 and may have been in poor health. Even after he had returned to Brasted Henry seems to have defaulted on his rates.

Henry Cole became a beer shop keeper. In February 1832 James Wickenden entered the room where Sarah Cole, Henry's daughter was sitting and offered her a piece of stolen beef. The fact that he broiled a piece of beef in her presence suggests that the room was used as a public room. (Quarter Sessions).

On October 26th 1839 Cole, beerhouse keeper, was prosecuted for breaking the Beer Acts. Cole was fined £2. (Sevenoaks Petty Sessions).

In January 1841 John Stone and Reuben Barham burgled the house in Westerham of Samuel Coppinger, together with William Wood. Afterwards Barham and Wood went to Cole's beershop in Brasted where they ordered some beer, and Barham went out for some beef steaks which Mrs Cole cooked. While Wood went out for some gin Barham changed a half sovereign with Mrs Cole. (Quarter Sessions).

In the census of 1841 Henry Cole is shown living in Brasted village on the north side of the Street. He was aged 50, a beershop keeper. His wife was aged 40, and his daughters were Elizabeth (20) and Eliza (15), and there was a granddaughter Ellen (1). In 1851 Henry was an agricultural labourer, aged 60. His wife Sarah was 54. And his grandchildren were Ellen (11) and Thomas (8).

In 1848 Henry received a coat from Newman's Charity. In 1854 Mrs Henry Cole received a petty coat and in 1855 a gown. In 1856 Henry received a jacket, in 1860 a coat, and in 1863 a coat.

In the census of 1861 Henry was 71, agricultural labourer, and Sarah was 65. Living with them were Thomas Cole, 18, grandson, an agricultural labourer, and Caroline Chilman, 14, a granddaughter. In 1871 Henry is still there (80) with Sarah (74), and Catherine Cole (11), greatgranddaughter, Ann Cole (7), greatgranddaughter and Thomas Cole (28), blacksmith, grandson.

Sarah was buried at Brasted on 26th December 1873, aged 76. Henry died on February 4th 1874 "of natural decay" and was buried at Brasted. His daughter Eliza Chilman was present at the death.
