The Weald of Kent, Surrey and Sussex
Frant
Frant is a village and parish situated on the brow of a hill 2 1/2 miles south of Tunbridge Wells. Frant is in the Rye division of Sussex, in the hundred of Rotherfield, rape of Pevensey, rural deanery of Etchingham, archdeaconry of Hastings and diocese of Chichester. Frant is 36 miles south of London
The population of Frant in 1811 was 1,439; in 1851 was 2,280 (of which 483 are in Tunbridge Wells); in 1861 was 2,469; in 1871 was 3,263 (of whom 314 were in Kent and 1,100 were in Tunbridge Wells); in 1881 was 3,481 (of whom 314 were in Kent and 1,100 were in Tunbridge Wells); in 1891 was 1,887; in 1901 was 1,692; in 1911 was 1,671; in 1921 was 1,621; and in 1931 was 1,604 - the drop in population is primarily due to the transfer of Broadwater Down parish (formed on 28th June 1867) to Tunbridge Wells in 1894.
Frant is shown on early historical documents as Farat - 'the place of the fern'.
