Alfred Frederick William Burton was born in Kingsland, Hackney in 1848, the third of eight children of Frederick William Burton, a wood carver and cabinet maker, and his wife Eleanor. He followed his father and became a cabinet maker in Islington where he married Fanny Hilbert at St. Mary's Church on 20th December 1876. His career changed to become an artist who painted in oil. Alfred and Fanny's life in Hackney was blighted with the death of their first two daughters in infancy and prompted their move to Camden Park in Tunbridge Wells close to where Fanny's parents had moved. They proceeded to have a family of three sons and two daughters in Tunbridge Wells.
Alfred signed his pictures 'F.W. Burton' and his career as an artist in oil blossomed with his pictures of Kent scenes which were published as postcards by Salmon & Co. of Sevenoaks. In 1909 six of his paintings were included in Lady Hope's English Homes and Villages (Kent and Sussex)
Alfred died at his home 149 Grosvenor Road and was buried on 21st February 1916 at Tunbridge Wells Cemetery alongside his wife Fanny who had died in 1910.
