1879RecollectionsJohn Stevenson, farmerSpring FarmAshdown Forest dispute

During The Ashdown Forest Dispute 1876-1882 commoners and land owners were interviewed by the solicitor William Raper. Their comments were recorded in a series of notebooks:

Stevenson, John. 62. Born in Fletching Street, 16 December 1816. Father, Henry Stevenson, was a bargeman. I helped him. In 1838 he took the Spring Farm and Bottings Farm in Fletching, 40 acres (Sir S. M. Wilson) and about 10 years after he took the Pasture Fields, 20 acres in Fletching (Sir S. M. Wilson). He farmed the whole till his death at Christmas 1878 and I succeeded him
