During The Ashdown Forest Dispute 1876-1882 commoners and land owners were interviewed by the solicitor William Raper. Their comments were recorded in a series of notebooks:

Diplock, James. Farmer, aged 49. Owns about 40 acres called Lower Spring Gardens. Bought it 17 years ago. Part is copyhold (3 tenements) of Duddleswell Manor paying Quit rent of 10s., 2s. 6d., and Is. His Grandfather owned land close by called Mailing Down, about 50 acres, and his Father after him.
