| Whiligh became a separate manor in the reign of Edward III. Before that it was part of the Manor of Ticehurst and of the Bibleham portion of Wadhurst then held by the family of Pashley. In 1372 (Edward I.) the "Whileigh" lands were granted by Sir Robert de Pashly to two residents of Goudhurst, one of whom in 1427 settled them on Ralph Shoyswell and his wife, the widow of Thos. | Whiligh passed by indentures of 1479 and 1501 to William Saunders of Goudhurst the owner of Great Pell then "an extensive mansion." | |||||

| In 1512 he [William Saunders] left all his property in Wadhurst and Ticehurst to John Courthope of Hartfield, who had married his daughter and was also his co-heir in blood. That devise led to protracted litigation, only ended when in 1539 John Courthope granted Whiligh, Burgess land, and Moseham to his younger son George, the elder brother John receiving other land, and releasing by a deed of 1541 all his rights and interests in the above named lands. Since that Whiligh has passed from father to son in that same line, every ,successor a George Courthope. | |||||

| During the rising in Scotland in 1745 in favour of "The Pretender," Wadhurst and Ticehurst, like other places, had hot Jacobites and keen Hanoverians. The then Vicar of Wadhurst, Bush, always attributed much of the feeling shown against him in the matter of his tithes, to his having reported to Whiligh on the authority of a Ticehurst farmer that the Vicar of that place had preached a sermon in favour of the Pretender. | |||||
