| 1888 | Directory entry | Etherton, J. H., ironmonger, High street | | High street | Brooker's Guide | | The incident occured on Aug. 8th, 1881, and was as follows:-The eldest son of Mr. Etherton, the proprietor of this establishment, was, when about 7 years of age, running down the yard at the rear of the business premises just as a workman was drawing water from a well, and in endeavouring to pass a van which was standing in the yard, the lad ran over the wood-work of the well and, missing his footing, fell down the well, a distance of 50 feet, to the' water. On raising an alarm, Mr. Etherton, without a moment's delay, at the imminent peril of his life, got into the pail and was let down, reaching the water just as the child had gone under the third time. He, however, succeeded in grasping him by the arm, and held him above water until a rope was let down, which he fastened round the child's body ; a second rope was then given him, which he fastened round his own body. A number of willing hands having by this time come to the rescue, father and son were drawn up and safely landed, the latter having sustained no serious injury.............more |

| 1902 | | The High Street, Uckfield photographed by Francis Frith | | | | | The Frith archive was founded by Francis Frith, the pioneer Victorian photographer, in 1860 and today contains over 365,000 photographs of some 7,000 towns and villages throughout Britain. Taken between 1860 and 1970 these form a topographical record of Britain without equal and is recognised as probably the only photographic collection of national importance in private hands in Britain today.
The importance of the Frith archive is as a topographical and social record. It provides an amazingly detailed visual record of over 7,000 towns and villages, as well as illustrating the enormous social and structural changes which have taken place in Britain since 1860. Whilst some of the photographs are undoubtedly artistically outstanding, the real value of the archive lies in its scale. There is no other archive which can illustrate this period of British history so extensively or to such a high quality. |
