| 1879 | Recollections | | Thomas Newnham | Piltdown | Ashdown Forest dispute | | During The Ashdown Forest Dispute 1876-1882 commoners and land owners were interviewed by the solicitor William Raper. Their comments were recorded in a series of notebooks: Newnham, Thomas. 87. (Witness is infirm and rather vague in memory but he will keep to what is noted down.) Living near the Star at Piltdown. I was born at Annwood Farm, which then belonged to Mr. Charles Marchant. My Father used the farm, over 200 acres. I worked for my Father on the farm and lived there till I was about 50. During 3 or 4 years of that time I went to live at Horsted Kaynes where my Father also used the Oddins Farm and I still worked at Annwood. After I gave up working for my Father, I still lived at Annwood and worked for Mr. Mabbott at Forest Farm and Gooses Farm near Chelwood Common for 24 or 25 years. Then I took a little farm called Aliens Farm, but its proper name was Wilmots (8 acres) joining Chelwood Farm and near Annwood Farm. I had it about 5 years then my wife died about 6 years ago and I gave up work except doing a little for Mr. Hoather at Annwood Farm. ...............

| 1879 | Recollections | | Charles Newnham, labourer | Piltdown | Ashdown Forest dispute | | During The Ashdown Forest Dispute 1876-1882 commoners and land owners were interviewed by the solicitor William Raper. Their comments were recorded in a series of notebooks: Newnham, Charles. About 65. In full health and vigour. Living near the Star at Piltdown Down, Maresfield. Farmer. I am the youngest son of Nicholas Newnham who used Annwood Farm. Thomas Newnham (witness) is my eldest brother. 168 I was born at Annwood and worked with my Father there till he gave up the farm, that was about 1 year after I was married. I was 25 when I was married in 1838. After my Father gave up the farm I worked for the owner Mr. Marchant (of Folkestone) for 4 years. Then I went to Barcombe for a few months and then to Goldstrow under Mr. Carr about 2 years. Then I went to Piltdown and worked for Mr. John Kenward on Moores Farm about a year, then I moved into Kent for 3 years, then to Berkshire for 10 months. Then I went back to Kent about 8 years, then I went to Epsom for about 11 years, then I came to Nutfield 2 years [and] then I came back to Fletching and took the Pound Farm under Lord Sheffield for 8 years and left it this last Michaelmas. ...............
