The Reverend John Jowett

The Reverend John Jowett from Bourne Cambridgeshire was next appointed Rector though it was thought not absolutely; only for a term of Years until the Honarable William Edward the Youngest Son of Earl & Countess De.la.warr being of Age to take the Rectorship, but He prefering a Military to a Clergyman's Life, Mr Jowett continued to take the Tithe untill his Death. But it was the opinion of many People after a certain time He only retained a portion of it as an Annuity, the remainder passing on to Earl De.la.warr.

After His appointment He had a three Barrelled Organ fix'd in the centre of the Gallery built by H. Bryceson, Tottenham Court Road, London. The Front of the Gallery was Painted white on the Panels of which the different Charities of the Parish were Printed which He had Painted out and the Front Grain'd Oak, the Lettering was transfer'd to a large Board which was placed over the Door leading into the Porch.

He also had about the Year 1853 or 4 a Hot Air Apparatus fix'd in the Church but it never answer'd and the Pipes gave out in a very short time.

In the Year 1834 the Chapel at Holtye was Built through his exertions and through Him the present School was Built, how the Money to Build it was rais'd to pay for it I do not know, although I have a Notion he contributed towards it as there is or was a Cow Shed in the Fields as well as a Wood Shed near the House Built with the old Materials of the former School. The Ground on which the present School stands with the Play Ground, School Garden, and the Rectory Kitchen Garden was before the School was Built a Grass Field occupied by the Present Doctor Walliss's Father but whether it was a Part of the School Charity or given by Earl De.la.warr I do not know.

The Building lately used as a Harness Room and Coach House by the Reverend Edward Polehampton was Built by Mr Jowett as a Sunday School Room. The Teachers Services were voluntary. The Sunday School was formerly in the Chancel. The Teachers were paid each One Shilling every Sunday Morning contributed by the Dean, my Grandfather paying it in the Dean's Absence at Chichester. The Teachers were for the Girls Mrs Woodhams of Gallipot; for the Boys Benjamin Norman a Carpenter of the Village. Mrs Woodhams also kept a sort of first School for small Children in the House now a Beer House kept by Her Grandson William Woodhams alias Sands.
