Notes and Recollections of Alterations and Changes in Hartfield since my Childhood |

Mr Jowett told me He practised as a Doctor in Lancashire at one time. He was quite Blind the latter part of His Life. He also had a Brother and Sister quite Blind. He died rather suddenly on a Sunday Evening and Buried in the Churchyard June the 6th 1859 Aged 83 Years and Eleven Months. After the Death of Mr Jowett his Widow went to Grove Hill Tonbridge Wells where She Died and was brought to Hartfield and Buried in the same Grave with her Husband. She Died April 9th 1865. The Reverend John Jowett appointed me as Parish Clerk March 26th 1849 as succesor to my Grandfather Fortunatus Slater who had held the Office for Sixty Years during parts of the Incumbencies of Five successive Rectors as shown on His Grave Stone. He having expressed in His Life a wish that a Stone should be erected to His Memory, Mr Jowett accordingly Dictated the Inscription, my Father supplying the Stone which is of York, my Brother engrav'd the Inscription. After Grandmother's Death I came to Hartfield to live and look after Him, He being too infirm to being left with my youngest Sister who had been living with them to wait on and assist Grandmother. When I first came to him I acted as His Deputy by Digging and filling up the Graves and doing all Bells. He continued in the Desk as long as He was able to do it. After He was past doing all Duty He continued to almost the very last to Hobble into the Church every Sunday. After He was past doing any Duty I took the whole of the Duties, handing all Fees as well as His Salary over to a fund in Mr Jowetts Hands towards a weekly allowance for his support. My Grandfather died March 9th 1849 at the Age of 87 Yeasrs, His last Birth Day being the previous New Years Day. My Grandmother died July 10th 1846 at the age of 91 Years her next Birth Day being September 22nd. She was a native of Cowden Parish. Her Maiden Name was Ann Berry. Her Father work'd at the Furnace at Cowden before they were put down by the Government. After the Death of Mr Jowett, the Reverend Edward Polehampton was presented to the Living Absolutely. It was reported that through some attention to the Honorable William Edward Earl De.la.warr's Son when Ill abroad, He promis'd to do something for Him, consequently the Presentment for Life. |
