Slater, Isaac. Intelligent man but health uncertain, recently had a fit. 54. Born at Duddleswell Paygate. Baptised at Hartfield. Lived at the Paygate till 27 years old. From 8 or 9 worked regularly for Lord De La Warr at first in the Vetchery and Wrens Warren planting trees and about the estate in the woods and nursery. When about 23 or 24 was transferred into the stable and worked there till about 16 years ago and lived with Dr. Hopkins in Hartfield Street as groom for a year then to Mr. Leach at Fishers Gate about 6 months then to Colonel Morris of Hartfield Grove, then called Snow's Hole as coachman for 2 years and then removed here 12 years ago and have worked for him for 10 years till just lately. When working for Lord De La Warr I had to walk over the Forest to and from work [and I] used to see what was going on. The nursery was close to Fryars Gate, when I was a boy Obediah Hall who [lived] at Hendal Farm, Withyham, had large quantities of litter from the Forest. I used to see his team carrying it. Hubbard was the carter. Also Mr. Paris at Ham Farm, Withyham, also Hale at Hale's Farm adjoining, also Dives at Blackbarn Court adjoining. Powers was his carter. Ashby of Hole Farm and Killick close by. Ashby and Killick used to turn out. I do not know about the others. All these farms belonged to Lord De La Warr. While I lived at Duddleswell, Paris of Chillies Farm, Buxted used to have his litter and various other things. I used to see his teams. Benham of Puxty used to have litter at times but he had more mould to mix with dung as manure for his hops. He was a great hop-grower. Barnes of Rocklands had litter. |
