Heasman, Henry. 68. Living at Page's Gill born 22nd February 1811 in Page's Gill and baptised at East Grinstead (twin brother of Samuel Heasman). Has lived close to Page's Gill all his life.

When I was young my brother Samuel and I worked together. We both cut for the late Mr. Hastie of East Grinstead about 40 years ago. His tenant Ray (dead) carried it. We also cut for Ray. His farm was called Cherry Garden.

I cut more than once for old Mr. Mills the farmer at Ashurst Wood and for his son since. Also once for Mr. Meggins of Hammerwood, both 40 and 50 years ago. Also for Mr. Hoper at his own place called Thornhill, this side of Hammerwood. He was head sawyer for the De La Warr's and had to do with the Forest. Also for Stephen Langridge (dead) of Upper Parrock, more than once. Also for Tom Bond (dead) who had a little farm of his own at Ashurst Wood adjoining Thorn Hill. Also for his brother who had a little farm adjoining the turnpike at Forest Row and for Edward Heaver who succeeded him and also Huggett who succeeded him and Keeys who has the farm now. Also for John Histed and his nephew Henry Histed.

I recollect my Father cut for John Histed's father who had Pigstyes Farm before Edward Heaver. I also cut for Thomas Betchley and Henry Histed at Burnt House Farm and I have (seen) their successor Glasier's cart carrying home litter. Also for Betchley when at South Park. Also for Underwood who had South Park after Betchley and Horseshoe. Also for Quickenden, perhaps 10 years ago, who had Mudbrooke.

Also a good many years for Waghorn who had a little farm now belonging to Mr. Freshfield adjoining Ivy Cottage and for Bashford who now uses it. I cut turf for Waghorn over 40 years ago, for Humphreys, also for Gardner at Bank Farm adjoining Stonehouse, afterwards for Dawson his successor and since for Waters who now occupies it. Also many loads for Edgar at Pixton Hill. My brother William (now dead) cut many loads for his successor Henry Allfrey. I cut turf for Edgar and Allfrey and I have cut for Colonel Moor many times, not including the last two years.

I often saw Borrer of Wallhill, his teams carrying in litter.

I cut for Denman, Brooker, Henry Allfrey, Cuthbert Larkin and the present tenant Mr. Hinley at Stonehouse. I cut turf for Allfrey there. Also for Edward Heaver and Robert Turner at Tablehurst and Pigstyes and George Heaver who had Pigstyes for a time after his father's death. I cut turf [fort Heaver's tenants and Turner. We cut for anybody who wanted a load and turf for all the poor people about and never paid anything.

All the poor people turned out their cows. The forest was once driven in my recollection about 50 years ago and the cottagers cows were impounded at Nutley and the people pulled down the pound and rescued the cattle but no proceedings were taken. Edward Heaver and his son helped drive. The Forest was never driven afterwards.

Anyone has always had litter and turf who wanted it without interruption till 2 years ago when I and others had proceedings taken against us by Lord De La Warr. Bordman was our lawyer. I have heard that it was decided in my favour.

I cut turf for Waters on Forest Row Green.

I have often been out with Mr. Augustus Elliott Fuller's harriers over the Forest.
