Ambrose Homewood

Homewood, Ambrose. 40. Barnes Gate, Buxted. Stockman under Mr. Robert Wilson. My Father Michael Homewood (dead) lived under Mr. Kenward who owned Welshwood Farm (40 acres), Rock's Farm (100 acres) and Stonecross Farm (30 acres), all in Rotherfield. He lived on Welshwood Farm. When I was a boy of 9 or 10 I used to go with my Father on to Ashdown Forest to bring in turf for the labourer on all those three farms. They used to have litter (but I cannot say whether from the Forest or from Pippingford). About 14 years ago I came back from Newick to Barns Farm and worked for Mr. Robert Wilson about 3 years. I then went to work on the Uckfield Railway a short time and then I went to live at Chillies and worked for Mr. Saunders about 6 months and then came back to Barns Gate 11 years ago last July and have worked there ever since. Mr. Wilson has had litter for Barns Gate by Stroods every year I have worked for him except the winter of 1878-9. He has had some this year. He once had a little turf to burn for the ashes and I have had turf for fuel in Barns Gate House. He has also turned out nearly every year young stock and sometimes sheep. We had stock out this year. Mr. Saundas had no litter from Ashdown Forest while I was there. He used to get it from Crowborough Common.

I know Puxtys Farm which Mr. Patmore has recently sold to the Duke of Norfolk. Mr. Weinholt farmed it till Michaelmas 1879 and I know he used to have litter from the Forest every year, perhaps a dozen load. I used to see his team getting it. They often passed through Barns Gate Farm with it.

I know Perryman's Grove Farm belonging to Mr. Hill. Whitewood has been the tenant for perhaps 12 years. He has had litter regularly from the Forest. His team often carried it through Barns Gate. He has had some this autumn. Mrs. Gilbert, Mr. Clifton and Mr. Taylor who have used Clacketts Farm successively (adjoining Perryman's Grove) have also had litter. Mr. Wilson has gravel off the Forest for roads and pays the Lord so much a year for digging it. He has had mould also and paid.
