James Walter

Walter, James. 62. Born at Fairwarp and lived in the immediate neighbourhood all my time. My father was John Walter. He was a sawyer and when I was first able to work I used to go with him. When I was barely 20 my Father hired Northlands of Lady Shelley except 1 field (Gasson used this field before my Father in conjunction with Lampool). Later on my Father also hired the Maresfield portion of Oldlands called Siderolls and Mill Farm, 18 1/2 acres each, and later on when Mr. Lewry left Norton's Farm (adjoining Lampool) my Father gave up Northlands and took it. I helped my Father on these farms. Later on he gave up Norton and Siderolls and took Putlands and Kenwards Farms of Lady Shelley and he held them and Mill Farm till he died. I helped him farm all of these farms and after his death I took Putlands and Kenwards and still use them and my brother Alfred took Mill Farm till after Mr. Nesbitt bought it. When my Father gave up Siderolls my sister Mrs Thorp and her husband took it. Thorp died there and it was then let to Tyrrell till Mr. Nesbitt purchased it.

While my Father used Northlands we had litter and turf off the Forest, also at Norton, at Siderolls, Mill Farm, Putlands and Kenwards, the latter down to the present time. The Thorps had litter at Siderolls. There was no yard at Mill Farm.

I remember when Benjamin Minns had Oldlands he used to have a little litter off the Forest. John Minns also had litter and turf. Then Mr. Nesbitt came and he has had litter including this year.

I know Summerford. I remember old Mr. Edward Page using it. He had a great deal of litter and turf and turned out. His son Edward succeeded, he did the same. It was then let to my nephew Walter Walter [who] had it for some years, he had litter and turned out. Then Norman had it a year and did the same and Mr. Page's children have taken it again this Michaelmas.

I know Fairwarp Farm. When I was a boy Star used to have it. He had litter and turf and turned out. He was succeeded by a Mr. Cook who used it a short time, only 1 or 2 years, and then let it to Thomas Osborn who used it 14 years til this last Michaelmas. Cook and Osborn have both had litter and Osborn has had turf. Norman has now taken the farm this Michaelmas and has had litter this autumn.

I know Cophall. I first remember when I was a boy that it was used by John Page. I used to work with him. He had great quantities of litter and turf and turned out. He carted a great deal of turf for other people. He died there and was succeeded by his son Tom who had large quantities of litter and turf and turned out. He died there and then it was let to Mr. Tutor. He has a good bit of litter and turf and turned out. He left the farm 2 or 3 years ago and was succeeded by Mr. Pilbeam who has had some litter but not a great deal.
