Chatfield, Thomas. 55. At Portmansford Farm (Lord Sheffield), Fletching. Born in Chailey 33 years ago I came to Furriers Green as a wheelwright under Langridge for several years. Langley (dead) used Sliders Farm then and had litter and turf from the Forest. I used to see his teams carrying them. About 23 years ago I came to Sliders Farm (Lord Sheffield's), Fletching, and farmed it 2 years and had litter, turf and gravel from Ashdown Forest and turned out. I know the field on Sliders Farm about 9 acres called the Marriels and adjoining the Grouts. I remember our field was thrown into it. Then I moved to Chelwood Common Farm 5 acres (Turner of Tablehurst) for 6 years. During that time 3 acres were added when Chelwood Common was enclosed, part allotted and part bought. 162 I had litter and turf and gravel off the Forest and turned out. I then moved to Portmansford Farm where I have lived for the last 13 years. I have had litter every year off the Forest, except last year and the year before. This year I have had some. I have not turned out from this farm because it is more trouble than the feed is worth. I succeeded my father in law James Browning at Portmansford Farm; he died 14 year ago. He told me [he] had had the Farm for 30 years. I used to be up at the farm constantly from the time I came to Furners Green and I know he always had turf and litter every year. He occasionally turned out. I used to go out to the farms wheelwrighting.

I know Northlands Farm (Lord Sheffield). When I first came to Furners Green, Daniel Lewry was tenant there. He used to fetch litter and turf from the Forest. Then came Botting and Norman. I cannot say what they did. Alfred Best, the present tenant, came next. I have seen his team several times fetching litter including last year.

I know the Pound Farm. The first tenant I remember, Paris, used to have litter. His successor was Godly. He was only there 2 or 3 years and I do not remember what he did. Newnham the present tenant succeeded and he has had litter several times.
