Mark Avis

Avis, Mark. 62. Living at Spratts, Fletching. Laborer. Born in Fletching. When I was about 8 years old I went to work for Mr. Turner at the Church Farm, Fletching, for about 3 years as carter boy. I don't remember that he had any litter from the Forest there. I don't think he had because at that time he hired the Church Wood where he could get plenty of brakes. I then went to service as carter boy with Mr. Osborne at Woodcocks for 3 years. He had litter and turf off the Forest each year. I went with the team to fetch them. He turned out stock on the Forest. I then went to service with Mr. Russell who used Courtland Farm and Hole Farm (Lady Shelley) for 3 years. (Hole Farm is in the Forest and was part of the land allowed to Staples executors in 1693.) He had litter and turf at Courtland every year and turned out.

I then went to service with Mr. John Wood at Chelwood Farm as Carter boy for 2 1/2 years till Ladytide. He had litter and turf off the Forest each of those 3 winters and turned out. I fetched in the litter with the team. I then returned to Mr. George Turner at the Church Farm for 20 1/2 years as carter till his death. He did not rent the Church Wood then. He had litter off the Forest every winter. During that time I used to go and fetch it with the team. Mr. Cutler came after him and I worked one year for him, but he had no litter. I then went to work for Mr. Jesse Bellingham who used the Parsonage Farm and Hellwood Farm adjoining the Church Farm for 18 years till last Michaelmas when he gave them up. He had litter from the Forest every year except the last 2 or 3 when he did not want it. He grew a good deal at home.
