Stevenson, William. 61. Knabbs Farm, Fletching. Born in Fletching Street. My Father James Stevenson was a bargeman on the River Ouse and I worked with him. When I was about 21 years old my Father took the Knabbs Farm, 13 acres, (Lord Sheffield) and the Vicar's Glebe, 15 acres, and I continued the barge work but being at home once or twice every week and helping him in slack times. About 25 to 30 years ago he took in addition the Green Farm (Lord Sheffield), 46 acres. He died February 7 1874, and I took the farms on after him and hold them now. He had litter from Ashdown Forest all his time and I had some the first year but since I have had mine from Chailey Common. My Father used also to have a load or two of turf now and then from the Forest. My uncle Henry Stevenson used the Spring Farm, Bottings, and the Pasture Fields, Fletching, about 70 acres (Sir S. M. Wilson's). He took the land a year or two before my Father [went] to Knabbs. My uncle used these till Christmas 1878. I was often to and fro all that time and my Father and uncle used to work together very much. My uncle used to have litter regularly from Ashdown Forest. Our teams used often to go together for it. He also had turf. For the last 2 or 3 years I cannot say what he did, as business took me other ways. |
