William Turner |
Turner, William. Aged 65. Timber merchant [and] builder and owns about 20 acres of land. Some of it appears in the old decree of 1691 and I am entitled to Common rights on the forest. For the last 50 years he has from time to time taken a load of stone from the forest for the foundations of new houses and for repair to old ones and has never been asked to pay for it (Best says he has had a great quantity. He carted it for him.) He has also from time to time taken gravel for repairing roads and has paid Edwards for it. Has never taken turf for himself, except for a lawn. Has taken litter every year and have never paid for it. Has never had timber or underwood. He makes large quantities of bricks and pays Edwards for taking the earth and sand from the Forest. He employs a great many labourers and some of them who live on the border of the Forest cut turf for fuel. Some of them live in modern cottages. |
