Best, John. Aged 53. Was teamster to Mr. William Farmer for 9 years and then went dealer on his own account for several years and then took Widehurst Farm, Maresfield, which he has held for 13 years. It contains 20 acres. He also did a good deal of teaming for gentlemen. He has had one or two loads of stone and gravel off the Forest to use on his farm and has never paid. His farm has a right on the Forest. The landlord is Mr. Hobden. He carried the greater part of the stone used by Sir Spencer and never paid anyone for it. Knew that many of the people round his neighbourhood had stone and never paid for it. Had turf and litter all his life without respect to the place he might be living in.

Bought wood off the Forest at Lord De La Warr's sale. Never had any holly.
