Before I went to Fletching I remember the tenant named Hills at South Park Farm, now belonging to Mr. Larnach. Marled some of his fields. The marl was dug from a pit adjoining Kidbrooke Farm. Collett the tenant at the Clay Pits used to dig marl there. Clay Pits is now called the Priory (Mr. Birch's).

I used to hear old people say that this house had a right to brakes and litter to so much wood for firing and to turn out 2 head of cattle on the Forest in return for taking hay out to the deer in winter.

I have heard my grandfather say that in his time the timber used to be as thick as possible between here and West Hoathly on both sides of the road.

The Speaker farmed his own land. He never turned his cattle out; he had plenty of feed without. He had the Warren what supplied him with all the litter he required. He used to dig stone on the Forest outside his fence. I have heard that the great stones in his Cascade were taken from there.

There is an old quarry on the left hand side going to Wych Cross. My grandfather used to tell me he had hired it at one time from the Duke or Duchess. He paid 2s.6d. a year at first then they raised him to 5s. and went on raising him till I think it came to £5. Blackstone and Lynn had it after. I recollect their working there.

I remember Augustus Elliott Fuller at Ashdown House. He kept a tidy pack of harriers, 10 or 12 dogs, and used to hunt them on the Forest. I remember he used to ride a cob. I used to go up and follow them. Lord De La Warr or any of his people were never with them.
