According to the bastardy papers of the parish of Frant, in 1740 Martha Smith brought a bastardy claim against Thomas Groombridge for her child Martha born in 1740 at the house of George Martin. Thomas Groombridge was required to pay 50 pounds for the upkeep of this child. Thomas Groombridge later became the parish clerk of Withyham and both he and his then wife Martha née Smith died of smallpox in 1761.
