Recollections
Ashdown Forest dispute

During The Ashdown Forest Dispute 1876-1882 commoners and land owners were interviewed by the solicitor William Raper. Their comments were recorded in a series of notebooks:

Steer, William. 87. Living at East Grinstead. Born at Lingfield in May (1792). Baptised there. Had Mudbrooks 6 or 7 years and Huggett had it afterwards and was followed by Quickenden. (Note. Quickenden took it in 1859.) Steer did not have anything off the Forest or turn out and can tell us nothing about his neighbours. John Gardner had the farm before him.
