Recollections
Ashdown Forest dispute

During The Ashdown Forest Dispute 1876-1882 commoners and land owners were interviewed by the solicitor William Raper. Their comments were recorded in a series of notebooks:

Falconer, William. 80. Working for Mr. Wood, nurseryman at Maresfield. Living near the Forest at Duddleswell. Born 10 August 1799 near the Fox. Baptised at Maresfield. I have lived close to Duddleswell all my life. My Father and grandfather were litter cutters [and] as soon as I was big enough I used to go out on the Forest and help my father cut litter and I have been at it ever since, including this year. While I was a boy I remember he cut a great deal for George Page who owned and used a farm now belonging to Lady Shelley and lying near the park between Lampool and Maresfield.
