During The Ashdown Forest Dispute 1876-1882 commoners and land owners were interviewed by the solicitor William Raper. Their comments were recorded in a series of notebooks:
Baines, Thomas. 72. Near Moors Farm, Fletching. About 50 years ago I came to Fletching and worked for Mr. Lewry who farmed part of the Mill Farm at Fletching.
He used to have turf off the Forest. I have been after it. I worked 4 or 5 years for him. I then worked for Mr. Uridge at Hillwood Farm. He lived in the house called Hungers Hatch and I lived with him. There is no house to Hillwood. I was 6 years with him. He used to turn stock on the Forest and used to have turf for fuel at Hungers Hatch house. I used to go for it. We had no litter; we had plenty of straw. Then I went to another part of Mill Farm under Mr. Allcock 4 years and then I went away 2 years and then return[ed] to Mr. Allcock and lived with him 17 years. He used to turn out on the Forest but never had turf or litter. Then after a time I went to live with Mepham at Taylor's Farm, 16 years. He used to have litter and turf. I left him about 2 years ago.
Baines might know something of Brownings Farm.
