ANDREW COLE of Edenbridge (c1480-1546)

He was probably not born in Edenbridge but came from somewhere not very far away. He married Annys Blundell, the daughter and heiress of John Blundell, yeoman, of Edenbridge, and inherited his house, lands and goods, including the "messuage next unto the churchyard". In 1546 he died leaving a will (Drb=Bishop of Rochester's court) witnessed by his brother James (of whom nothing further is known).

• His wife Annys to be executrix and to have all the moveables and unmoveables to distribute where she thinks fit, and "the house next unto the Stechbourn gate". Since the Titchbournes were living at Skinners Place at this time the Stechbourn gate is clearly adjacent to the church; i.e. this is "the house next unto the churchyard" (No 501 on the Tithe Award Map of 1844).
• His son John to have the "house in the market place of Edenbridge". This is probably TA 494 which was also known as Snowerhill.
• His son Richard to have the "house next unto Wayterman's Lane". This is probably TA 784, later known as "Coles", adjacent to the lane leading through Waterlakes.
• His son George to have the "house next unto the Stechbourn gate" after the decease of Annys.
• Elizabeth his daughter to have a feather bed and five marks.
• John Challinger to have a feather bed.
• James Cole (brother) and John Challinger to be overseers; the former to receive a steer and the latter a heifer and calf.

Andrew foresaw that his wife might remarry. In 1553 she was still Agnes Cole (will of George Cole, her son), but in 1555 she married Thomas Fraste.(or possibly Frythe)

Andrew Cole had the following children:
1. James of East Grinstead (c1500-1559).
2. John of Edenbridge (c1520-85).
3. Johane who married Richard Chapman of Edenbridge, butterman.
4. Julyan.
5. Richard.
6. George of Tonbridge, died 1552.
7. Elizabeth.
It is possible that there was also a Henry, but I (Lionel Cole) leave him out in the absence of information.

Andrew Cole had a brother JAMES COLE. Nothing is known of him except that he was the overseer of James's will and was buried in Edenbridge on January 26th 1560.
