Edmund Harman was born in 1535 the son of Richard and Clemencia Harman. He was aged 21 in the year of his father's death and had, in all probability, served his apprentice ship as a baker. This would have been for a period of seven years. The hours would have been long and he would have been living in with the family to whom he was apprenticed. After serving his apprentice ship Edmund would have been aged 28 when he married Ann in about 1562. We know through parish records that his first child was baptised in 1563 and also by these same records that his wife's name was Ann.

The land enclosures were still continuing forcing people off the land but Edmund and Ann would not have been affected by land enclosures for this had the main effect on those living in the smaller villages. Edmund being a baker would have been more concerned with the price of corn as this was always fluctuating.

Their children were the eldest Marie born 1562, then John, who was to be the next in the line of descent born in 1563, then came Richard named after his grandfather born in 1568, and lastly Robert, born in 1574. All the children were baptised at East Grinstead. Marie and John were baptised together in 1563.

Ann Harman died in 1593 aged about 58, and was buried at East Grinstead on the 27th February 1593 leaving her husband Edmund a widower. He was still alive when his son Richard died, when his grandson Edmund named after him died, and when two further grandsons Drew and John, sons of John and Mildred, died. It is possible that an outbreak of small pox occurred in 1621/22 for in the October of that year grandfather Edmund's younger brother Edward died at the age of 77 in the October. He then was buried on the 30th October at East Grinstead. Edmund's age at this time was about 80. Edmund died in 1628 at East Grinstead aged 93.
