John Harman was born in 1563 in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. He married Mildred Payne on the 25th November 1586 at East Grinstead. They had ten children, eight boys and two girls. John Harman followed in the footsteps of his grandfather Richard Harman as a mercer at Cooks Croft and Crookes Mead. Like his grandfather Richard and his father Edmund, John Harman was not a poor man as it did take money to be a mercer dealing in cloth and expensive materials. Like his grandfather Richard, John also would travel to different parts of the country.

The first and eldest boy of John and Mildred's marriage was Edward born in 1587, followed by William in 1588, John in 1589, Marie in 1591, Drew in 1593, and then Edmund in 1595, who was named after his grandfather. They were to be followed by George in 1600 and then Thomas in 1603, Joanne in 1605, and lastly James in 1608.

It is interesting to note that children's christian names were either named after grand parents, parents, or the brother and sisters of the parents.

Drew was only to live a short span of life and died in 1595 before he was two year's old and in the year 1612 John and Mildred also lost their son Edmund when he was only 17 years old. This was followed by the loss of another of their sons, John, at the age of 25, who had been named after his father.

John and Mildred's son John who died had been apprenticed as a tailor in Lewes, had completed his apprenticeship and was advertising in Lewes's Kelly's directories in 1610 at the age of 21. He was to continue in this trade for another four years before his death.

Then in 1615, Edmund and Ann's son and John's brother Richard, who was named after his grand father, died. He was aged 41 and was buried on the 17th October 1615.This following on the loss of their sons must have been a sad blow to John and Mildred.

In 1619 and 1620 two of John and Mildred's children married - William the second son on the 22nd September 1619 to Jane Cole at All Saints, Lewes and in the following year George Harman married Elizabeth Langridge on 20th February 1620, at East Grinstead.

In December1628 John Harman died at the age of 65 and was buried at East Grinstead on 13th December 1628. Mildred Harman died six years after the death of her husband John aged about 72 and was buried with her husband John at East Grinstead on 5th August 1635.
