In the Hartfield Paupers ledgers William and his family are shown as paupers receiving help from 1807 - March 1822. In some years support given is entered every two weeks. In 1807 he had three children and received goods such as 2 bushels of Hoy Corse (sic), half dozen Spinning, 4 Gallons of Flour, and money varying from 5 shillings to 2 pounds. William must have found work intermittently as his son William was born in a nearby village in 1811. In 1813 he received 15 shillings per month and in 1814 12 shilling a month but in August received 5 shillings extra for the loss of a pig and later 5 shillings for shoes. In 1815 William is listed as having 5 children. In 1816 - to board and clothe his sons and daughter he received one shilling and eleven pence per week. Once the children were eleven they were 'put out' presumably placed in employment by the parish. In 1819 Sophia Sandalls is listed with 46 other children in the Vestry minutes. In 1820 Sophia and Thomas are listed as 'wanting places'. Sophia's death appears in the 1821 Vestry minutes 'Daughter Sophia taken ill at Hocdoon (unclear) Auguest 25 and after livng at her father's died Sept 2 1821 at 12 o'clock noon.' No Sendall children appeared in the 1822 Vestry minutes.
Supporting the poor was a great burden on the parish and the Poor Rate rose from 2s 6d in the pound in May 1819 to 4s in the pound in Oct 1820.
