Robert Taylor was born 30th April 1834 in Brighton, Sussex, England and educated at Haileybury College, Hertford, which trained people for civil service in India! He became a teacher and came to Australia 1854/1855 with his wife Elizabeth whom he had married in 1854 at St Nicholas, Brighton.
Robert commenced theological training in Australia and studied at Moore College, Liverpool, NSW in 1858. He was deaconed by Bishop Barker in 1859 and became Locum Tenens in the parish of St Barnabas', Sydney and in Castle Hill with Pennant Hills and Dural, where he was ordained priest on 24 February 1861. In January 1866 Rev Robert Taylor was appointed curate, St Stephens Newtown and in 1868 appointed curate-in-charge. In 1870/1872 he was appointed Rector, St Stephens, Church of England, Newtown (original church designed by Edmund Blacket and begun in 1844, dedicated in 1845, but became too small for the congregation growth that followed appointment of Robert Taylor). From 1871 until 1874 he oversaw the construction of the new church building, also designed by Edmund Blacket. Marked progress was made under his ministry, and the church became too small to accommodate the large congregation. It was decided to erect a new church, but how could it be built? The parish was large and populous but the majority of the people poor. Before any subscriptions were solicited 1000 pounds was raised in answer to prayer. The rector objected to other means of raising money, baseing his assurance that the church would be built upon the promise "God shall supply all our needs" (Rev John Bidwell, 1924, at the time of the church's jubilee)
