Terry Humphrey's records
In 1871 Census Eliza Baker and brother John are living at home in Brasted with parents.
In 1881 she is still in Brasted but is now Eliza HUMPHREY (servant). Grandaughter Fanny Baker aged 2 also in house.
Later in 1881, living at 19 Broad Street, Poplar, London. (Info Ann Marie).
Later lived at 3, Back of Manchester Terrace, Poplar, and then at 9 Barque Street Poplar.
At some stage she ran away from Poplar taking William with her. Grandad (James) remembered being dragged across London to Eltham with his sister Emma, to catch a coach to Brasted. There, Edward swapped Emma for William, and they left. James never saw his mother again. Many years later James was cycling with an uncle when they called into a pub in Brasted where they were served by a young woman. When they had left the pub his uncle told him that the young lady was Emma, his sister. He never went back.
In 1891 Eliza is living in Bromley at 10, Vale Cottages, as a `housekeeper`, with her daughter Emma aged 2, and a William Day aged 48, General Labourer. In August 1891 she gave birth to Violet, and in 1893 to Lily. IN BOTH CASES THE FATHER IS GIVEN AS WILLIAM HUMPHREY.
(As Ann-Marie surmises "Was this William a brother or relation of Edward, or did for some reason William Day assume the name of Humphrey, as that was the surname of Emma, and of course Eliza, then?")
She died in 1894, and in the 1901 Census Emma, Violet and Lily are all living with their Uncle John and his wife Phylis at Brasted. Death Certificate records that she died of meningitis Tubercolosis 4 days, Exhaustion. William Day was present at the death.
