This is the Last Will and Testament of me Richard Pattenden of Westhothly in the County of Sussex Yeoman made this eighth Day of June in Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Eighty Eight as follows that is to say. First I Resign my Soul to God who gave it and my Body to the Earth to be therein decently buried at the Discretion of my Executors hereinafter named in the Church Yard of Westhothly aforesaid and it is my Will that my said Executors do as soon as conveniently may be after my decease cause to be erected a Head and Foot Stone together with a Bed Stone over my Grave. And as to all my Worldly Estate wherewith it hath pleased Almighty God to bless me after Payment of my just Debts Funeral Expenses Probate of this my Will and all other incidental Expenses I give and dispose thereof as follows. I give and devise All that my Freehold Farm and Lands situate lying and being in Westhothly aforesaid and now in my own Occupation Unto my Nephew William Pattenden and his Heirs and Assigns for ever In Trust nevertheless that he the said William Pattenden do and shall with All convenient speed after my decease sell and dispose of the same for the most money that can be gotten for the same. And it is my Will and I do hereby direct that the Purchaser or Purchasers thereof shall not be answerable or accountable for the Misapplication or nonapplication of such Purchase Money by the said William Pattenden. Also it is my Will and I do hereby order and direct that my Executors hereinafter named do as soon as conveniently may be after my decease convert all my Personal Estate of what nature or Kind so ever into Money and the Money arising as well by Sale of my personal Estate as the Money arising by Sale of my said Farm and Lands I give and bequeath in manner following that is to say One Tenth part thereof unto my Nephew Thomas Pattenden one other Tenth Part thereof unto my Sister Jane Guy one other tenth Part thereof unto my Sister Hannah Lambert one other tenth Part thereof unto my Nephew William Pattenden one other tenth Part thereof unto my Nephew Richard Pattenden one other tenth Part thereof unto my Nephew Edward Pattenden (Richard Pattenden) one other tenth Part thereof unto my Niece Mary the wife of John Maynard one other tenth Part thereof unto my Niece Elizabeth the Wife of Thomas Fisher all wch said eight tenth Parts or shares of Money arising as well by Sale of my personal Estate as the Money arising by Sale of my said Farm and Lands I do hereby order and direct shall be Paid to my respective Legatees within six Months next after my Decease by my Executors herein after named. Item I give and bequeath the two remaining tenth Parts of the Money which may arise as well by Sale of my personal Estate as the Money arising by Sale of my said Farm and Lands unto my said Nephew Edward Pattenden his Executors and Administrators to be Paid also within six Months next after my Decease In trust nevertheless to put and Place out the same at Interest upon Government or other Good and sufficient Security or Securities and Pay and apply the Dividends Interest and Produce thereof from time to time as the same shall be received or so much thereof as shall be needful for and towards the support Maintenance and Education and bringing up Sarah Brown, Daughter of my late Niece Ann Brown deceased untill she shall attain the Age of twenty one Years or Day of marriage which shall first happen and when as so soon as the said Sarah Brown shall have attained her said Age of twenty one Years or be married then Upon trust that the said Edward Pattenden his Executors or Administrators shall assign transfer and Pay the said two tenth Parts of the Money arising as well by Sale of my Personal Estate as the Money arising by Sale of my said Farm and Lands which shall be then invested or herein before directed to be invested in any of the Publick Funds and every Part and parcel thereof and all the Dividends Interest and produce then in arrear for the same unto the said Sarah Brown to and for her own absolute use and Benefit and wch I do hereby give and bequeath to the said Sarah Brown accordingly And I do hereby make nominate constitute and appoint my said Nephews William Richard and Edward Pattenden joint Executors of this my last Will and Testament hereby revoking all former and other Will and Wills by me at any time heretofore made and declare this and only this to be and contain my last Will and Testament. In Witness whereof I the said Richard Pattenden the Testator have to this my last Will and Testament contained in two Sheets of Paper set my Hand and Seal to the Top of the first Sheet where the same are affixed together and my Hand at the Bottom thereof and my Hand and Seal to this last Sheet the Day and Year first within written.

Signed sealed Published and declared by the said Testator as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us who have hereunto subscribed our Names as Witnesses in his Presence at his Request and in the Presence of each other the Word “tenth” in the third line from the Top of this sheet and the Words “her Executors and Administrators” in the ninth Line from the Top of this Sheet also being first interlined and the Name “Sarah” in the fourteenth line from the Top of this Sheet also being first wrote on an erasure

The Will of Richard Pattenden late of Westhothly within the Archdeaconry of Lewes Yeoman deceased was proved the first Day of November in the year of out Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety two before the Reverend Hillman Bostock clerk by Virtue of a Commission to him for that Purpose directed Upon the Oaths of William Pattenden Richard Pattenden and Edward Pattenden Executors therein named to whom was Committed the Administration of the Goods &c of the deceased they being first sworn well and faithfully to administer the same and so forth Sworn also that the Goods Chattells and Credits of the said deceased so not amount in Value unto three hundred pounds.
