Extract from Horsfield's History of Sussex
Edward Clarke was born at the parsonage house of Buxted, in the year 1730; his early education was superintended by Mr. Gerison, his father's curate; and after being for some time the pupil of the learned Jeremiah Markland, who was then resident at Uckfield, he became a fellow of St. John's College in Cambridge. In 1756 he was presented to the rectory of Pepper Harrow, in Middlesex; and in 1760 he left his living and visited Spain in the capacity of chaplain to Lord Bristol, Ambassador Extraordinary to Madrid. He afterwards accompanied Governor Johnstone to Minorca, in the quality of chaplain and secretary. In 1768, he no inducted to the vicarage of Willingdon and Arlington, in this county; and towards the end of the same year succeeded to the rectory of Buxted, on which he constantly resided till the period of his death, which took place in 1786. In the course of his life he published many valuable works.
Mr. Clarke left three sons and one daughter, the second of whom was Dr. Edward Daniel Clarke, the enlightened and enterprising traveller.
