Great Shoesmiths - 245 acres - takes its name from a family assessed in the Subsidy Roll of 1523 and 1575.

The house [Great Shoesmiths] seems to have been bought in 1622 from the Fowles of Riverhall by a John Barham, great grandson of the first possessor of Great Butts, who married a Dunmoll. He died in 1639 leaving all his property in Wadhurst and Frant to his second son, John. This John married at Frant, Elizabeth, daughter of his cousin, Nicholas of Great Butts, and died aged 31, leaving one son and one daughter. The son succeeding to this property, on coming of age, owned also Buckhurst and Snape Wood. He married Lucy, daughter of John Chauntler. Their only son died in infancy and their only daughter at the age of 16. In this last sorrow, and under the " growing influence of his wife," he executed deeds conveying to her power to dispose of both his real and personal Estate, to the prejudice of his near relations at Great Butts and Riverhall. Her will [of 1716 and proven 1727] bequeathed Shoesmiths, then in occupation of her second husband Puxty and W. Clarke, to G. Courthope of Whiligh and another : " to hold after decease of my said husband in trust for G. Eagles of Uckfield."

Eagles lived at Shoesmiths till his death in 1752. By this time, it is said, he had squandered the property and he left it to three neighbours - A. Courhope of Horsmonden being one - as trustees, to sell what remained, and to pay his debts, reckoned at £7,000. And so in 1753 it was sold to Charles Pratt, Esq., who rose from being Attorney General in 1758 to be Lord Chancellor and Earl Camden
