The Dorset Arms was (300 years ago) [now 400 years ago] Somers Farm House, and the land adjoining (Batchelor's Mead, or the Fair Field, Bachelor's Field, beyond the Park Fence, also the Round Knole, the Middle Knole, and the Knole) went with it. In one of the maps of Withyham, probably 100 [now 200] old, it was called the "Ale House". Within the memory of many parishioners a large barn stood where the present stable is, and was used for some years by the Reverend Sackville Stephens Bale, who farmed the land near the rectory. There was formerly a building where the dairy now stands, which was used as a slaughter-house by the Hartfield butcher. The chestnut tree on the village green was planted in 1849 to commemorate the return of Charles Richard, the sixth Earl De La Warr, from the Sikh War. It was conveyed to the green on a timber waggon, drawn by yoked oxen, and was planted with great ceremony. Many years ago the village stocks were on the mound where there is now the splendid ash tree. | |||||
