This is a reproduction of R. Godfrey's engraving of Sheffield Place formerly a seat of John, Lord De La Warr, who sold it with the estate for 31,000 pounds to John Baker Holroyd, who was raised to the peerage in 1780, as Baron Sheffield and afterwards became Earl of Sheffield. He was the intimate friend of Gibbon the historian who frequently stayed at the house. Gibbon's tomb is in Fletching Church.
