Recollections
At Barnsden Farm
Ashdown Forest dispute

During The Ashdown Forest Dispute 1876-1882 commoners and land owners were interviewed by the solicitor William Raper. Their comments were recorded in a series of notebooks:

Hazelden, Samuel. 63. Born at Isfield 15 April 1816 and baptised there. I am tenant of Barnsden Farm in Buxted parish on the Forest comprising 60 acres and belonging to E. J. R. Streatfield Esq. I hired it at Michaelmas 1869. I am also tenant under him of Streeter's Farm adjoining, comprising about 25 acres. It is in the parish of Maresfield; the parish boundary divides the two farms. I hired it about 2 years after I took Barnsden. I succeeded Henry Can junior at Barnsden and William Trunks (dead) at Streeters.
