During The Ashdown Forest Dispute 1876-1882 commoners and land owners were interviewed by the solicitor William Raper. Their comments were recorded in a series of notebooks:
Birley, Noah. About 60. Living at Marshalls Farm, Maresfield. Stockman. I was born on a little property adjoining Ashdown Forest and Homey Common opposite Old Forge, containing altogether about 30 acres. The Nutley and Maresfield turnpike now cuts it in two. I lived there with my Father till I was married 30 years ago and then I lived at Old Forge adjoining till 18 years ago, when I moved to Lampool close by for 4 years and then to Marshalls where I have lived for the last 14 years.
