WILLIAM COLE of Edenbridge, butcher (1605-1671)

He was the elder son of William Cole of Edenbridge, butcher, and his wife Martha. He married Elizabeth and by her had five sons and three daughters. William was listed in the Protestation Returns for 1641. His father died in 1647. In the assessments for subsidy to the Crown of 1601, 1608, 1628 and 1648 for Edenbridge no Cole is mentioned, but in the 1650s both William and his brother James were assessed for taxation to support the Army. William was a tenant of John Stanford. In 1664 the Hearth Tax shows that William possessed two hearths.

On 31st August 1669 William's wife Elizabeth was buried in Edenbridge. William made his will on 18th June 1670 and was buried on 26th September 1671. In his will (PCC):

An inventory was taken of the possessions of William Cole the elder (PCC).

Purse, girdle and ready money5s.
Wearing apparel£2.
In the hall
One table with a joined frame, one joined form, one little table, one joined cupboard, one joined settle£1
Eight pewter dishes, eight porringers, two saucers, five pewter candlesticks19s.
Two brandirons, three spits, two pairs of pothangers, two gridirons, two toasting irons, one smoothing iron, one iron to lay before the dripping pan, two tin dripping pans, three iron pots, five pairs of pothooks, one frying pan, a fire pan and a pair of tongs, two candlesticks£1-10s.
One joined chair and three small chairs, one window curtain3s-6d.
Four bowls and serving dishes3s.
One brass kettle, three brass skillets, one brass skimmer, one brass mortar, a brass warming pan, one iron chaffering dish19s.
In the parlour
One table with a joined frame, one joined form, four high joined stools, two low joined stools, one aumbry cupboard, one joined chair, and one flagbottomed chair and a dozen of trenchers£2-2s-0d.
In the chamber over the hall
One table with a joined frame, four joined chests, one trundle bedstead, one blanket, a coverlet, one form and a small chair£1.
In the chamber over the shop
one joined bedstead, one flock bed, two flock bolsters, one blanket and one coverlet, one sideboard table, one joined chair, one broad joined stool, one wicker chair£1-3s.
Ten pairs of sheets, three table cloths and three towels£3.
In the buttery
Seven small drinking vessels, four keelers and four small tubs, one bucking tub and two old pails£1-8s.
One woollen wheel, one linen wheel2s
Certain lumber and things of small value2s-6d.
Money owing upon bonds£300
Total£316-7s-6d

William Cole seems to have possessed a surprising amount of wealth in the form of bonds. In the 17th century only the very richest townsmen had goods and money worth as much as £300. There is nothing else about William to suggest wealth; nevertheless this is not an illusion because he bequeathed at least £165 in cash as well as two houses.
