The Prayer book was given toTerry Humphrey in 1968 by Mary Weller, daughter of Caroline Humphrey. I had visited St Laurence Church with my father and noticed that William Humphrey`s grave was spotless. I asked the vicar why and he told me an old lady cleaned it everymonth. We got in touch with her and she happliy gave me the Prayer book because her name was Weller. Sadly we lost touch when I moved to Italy.
In the 1851 Census William Humphrey, Lodger, occupation Farm Servant is living in Hall Place, Lower Bitchett, together with Jane Ovenden, lodger, House servant. Head of the household is William Bevan, Farm Baliff, a scotsman from Glamorganshire. In 1861 he is living in 5 Lower Bitchett, Seal, with wife Jane 26, Emma 5, George 3, Edward 2, James 6 mo., plus his father James, widower 66, and Frederick 21, William`s younger brother. In 1881 he is described as a General Labourer.
