Joined navy in 1887 and served for at least 25 years. Fought in the Nigerian War, and had a scar up his arm. Used to tell a yarn that he once dropped anchor in theRed Sea, and when he pulled it up there was one of Pharoah`s chariot wheels on the end.
Lived in Padwell near Humphrey Cottage. (Information from James Humphrey nephew.)
According to Brian Ilson, he had offices in the Naval College in Greenwich which were cleaned by Ada Betts, his mother. His two children also went to the college, and Ada Humphrey (1908) remembered passing sandwiches to them through the railings.
