John Harman was the second son of John and Rhoda Harman and followed the family tradition being named John. He was born at Cottage Hill on 16th January 1853 and baptised on the 6th March 1853. John Harman married Mary Benson at St Denys on the 24th July 1874. Mary Benson was born 28th April 1854 at Aldenborough, Yorkshire. Her father Francis was a groom and bailiff of Woodleigh, Withyham in 1874. Her mothers name was Hannah (nee Sinclair) Benson and her sister Helen Benson was one of the witness's at the wedding.

John sang in the choir for over fifty years at St. Denys church.

In the 1881 and 1891 census, John and his family lived at Primrose Villa, Cottage Hill.

After the death of his wife Mary on February 1st 1910, John went into business with his daughter Ella &her husband George Harman his nephew. In later life, John lived next door to George and Ella being looked after by Louisa Maria his eldest daughter.

John died on the 1st Jan 1931 and was buried on the 5th Jan 1931.
